Formation of International Squads for 2026/27.

Squad approach for International Selection and Development

Background

The SBU trustees and the Selection Committee have been aware that there has been little structured training and development available for Scottish players. And this has been reflected in recent international results.

Key Conclusions

•      That keys to players development was to improve the quality of the opposition players were playing against, and for players and partnerships to work hard on their own development.

•      Currently there was no structure in place to support players development once they go past junior ranks.

•      Any substantial improvement will require sustained commitment.

Action

From the 26/27 season we will formally establish a squad system. 

•      That the squads would be open to players targeting any of the Open, Senior, Women or Mixed teams.

•      The Open team for the 2028 Europeans will be selected from the Squad, as will the team for the second leg of the 2028 Camrose.

•      Membership of the squad will be a significant advantage in selection for other representative teams.

•      Players in the squad will be expected to commit to regular, structured activity with an openness to learning and development.

Squad Approach

We will be looking to have two squads –

- one focused on those who would be in immediate contention for one or more of the international sides.

- a development squad aimed at those who are aspiring to reach that level and have the potential and enthusiasm to do so.

The number of players in the squads will be flexible -we don’t want to turn away anyone suitable.

Priority will be given to selecting players with potential to improve rather than their current level. 

Activity

Activity will include

•      Playing with ambition in strong competition

•      Practice matches

•      Reviews of system,

•      Bidding practice (cue bids or alternative)

•      Coaching sessions

•      Squad get togethers.

•      Working with a mentor.

The exact mix of activities for an individual pair or player will be tailored to their particular development needs and their personal circumstances. 

It is accepted that given logistical constraints that much of the activity will be online. However, wherever possible players will be expected to play in significant Scottish events such as the National League, Scottish Cup and Winter Fours.
