Getting Started
What is bridge?
Bridge is a card game played in pairs.
You and your partner work together against another pair, using a standard deck of cards. It’s a game of thinking ahead, working as a team and gradually learning how to play your cards well.
You don’t need any experience to begin. Most people start with a simple version and build their understanding step by step.
Reasons to Play
Why people play it.
Sociable by nature
Bridge brings people together in a relaxed and welcoming way. Whether in clubs, online or at home, it creates space for conversation, connection and shared experience, without ever feeling overwhelming.
A rewarding challenge
It’s easy to begin, but offers just enough challenge to keep things interesting. As you play, you naturally build skills like memory, problem-solving and decision-making. Many players find themselves enjoying it long before they fully understand it.
It stays with you
Over time, bridge becomes more than a game: a weekly rhythm, a familiar routine and a lasting interest. It’s something you can return to again and again, building confidence as you go.
How it works
Bridge is played by four people, sitting opposite a partner.
Each round has two parts:
Bidding
You and your partner communicate using a simple system to decide how many tricks you think you can win.
Play
You then play the cards, working together to try and win those tricks.
You don’t need to understand all of this straight away. Most people start with a simplified version and build their understanding as they go.
