Winter Foursomes

Scottish BBL Cup (Double Elimination Teams). In the mid-70s the British Bridge League introduced a Gold Point scheme: success in nominated prestigious events earned points towards selection for British teams. Charlie Bowman, President 1965-66, argued that Scottish players were disadvantaged because we had no equivalent of the double elimination Spring Foursomes. He persuaded the BBL to present a trophy for such an event. It began in 1978 as a "double elimination teams" with a consolation Swiss: as numbers grew a subsidiary multiple team's event was introduced for teams eliminated early, and the consolation Swiss became a separate event. It has moved around the calendar, renamed the Autumn Foursomes in 1991, the Winter Foursomes in 2003.
